As a New York City native, born and raised in Brooklyn, I have a pretty clear idea of how people dress here in NYC.  I find it amazing that people love and appreciate the unique New York City style as much as I do. I want to help simplify the style of New York so that you can start creating looks of your own wherever you are.

Although I will always be an advocate for dressing in what makes you feel your best, I understand that sometimes we want to switch things up.  By the end of this article, you will know how to dress like a New Yorker and fit right in with the hustle and bustle of this amazing city.

This post is all about how to dress like a New Yorker.

How To Dress Like A True New Yorker

It is definitely true that people here in New York wear A LOT of black. At one point in time, my closet was 90% black and I took a look at it and realized I needed to spruce things up. The color black is still my go-to but I have tried to switch things up by adding pops of color. So for example, I will wear all black under a pink coat like I am below. While it is true that we do wear a lot of black here, there are definitely some awesomely bold outfits in the city. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns, and colors to stand out. Don’t be afraid of being bold. New Yorkers are not as mean as we seem, we just need a little coffee.

Stereotypical New Yorker Outfit

The stereotypical outfit that you find here in New York (in the boroughs) is rooted in comfort. We are commuters. Everything is within walking distance. If you need to get somewhere further, you hop on the subway. We are always running around with coffee in hand. In order to do so, practicality in dressing definitely comes first. If you venture out of Manhattan (which I highly recommend that you do) and into the boroughs you will see everyone dressed comfortably and practically.

How To Dress Like A City Girl

Among friends, we often say, “Let’s go to the city” when we are talking about heading into Manhattan. Whether it is for happy hour, brunch, a Broadway show, or window shopping. Whenever we take a trip into “the city”, even if it is just a 15-minute train ride away the outfits tend to change (for me at least).  I have found that people are a bit dressier in Manhattan, but again this depends on the situation. If you are heading to get your nails done in Manhattan, you will find people in athleisure. If you are heading to a restaurant in SoHo, you will definitely want to be a bit dressier. One of my go-to looks is all black with a blazer. We have already established that all black is the uniform here in New York City, but a blazer dresses up your look.
